Drivers arrived early at the track for the annual mid-season Brighton Automotive Canada Day Championships that would see them do their once a year time trials to vie for fastest lap and qualifying positions for the night.  All classes featured extra laps, extra purse money and double points so the intensity level was high as the cars hit the track one at a time each taking two laps to see who would get the bragging rights of fastest lap.

The Custom Carts of Trenton Poll Awards time trials began at 5pm and first class to hit the track was the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and it was Doug Anderson of Trenton setting fastest lap with a time of 18.881 seconds.  Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified Rookie #13 Dale Lock set the fastest lap in his respective class with a time of 17.039 seconds.  #17 Jeff Humphrey’s set the fastest time in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4’s however was later disqualified during post-race inspection handing the fastest lap to #78 Shelby Mills with a time of 19.507 seconds.  And for the third straight year Phil Potts of Frankford and his #29 Fowl Mood race team set the fastest lap in the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models with a blistering time of 15.140 seconds that averages over 128 kilometers per hour on the 1/3rd mile clay oval.

The Quinte Septic Stingers were the first feature to hit the track for the feature events and #19 Del MacGregor battled it out with the #06 Steve Wells as they have in almost every feature event this season.  MacGregor was able to follow up his minivan win from last week taking the 15 lap main event for the division.

Next up was the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division and the Poll Sitters were Humphrey’s and Mills as set from the time trials earlier in the night.  Humphrey’s would lead the race 20 lap main event from green to checker but was DQ’s in post-race inspection handing the win to #03 Justin Ramsey.  Ramsey was followed across the line by #43 Tom Vance and #10 Travis Mclean.

The Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models would take to the track for their 50 lap feature event.  #29 Phil Potts and #42 Adam Nayler would be poll sitters thanks to their timed laps earlier in the night.  Potts would jump out to the early lead but however third place starter #11 Corey Earl and fifth place starter #25 Greg Belyea would slip under Nayler and move into the second and third positions.  Potts was running the high line and Belyea would soon do the same to move around Earl for the second place position.  The first caution would come out just shy of the mid-race point for a spin by the #09 Mat Vanderlinden, on the restart Potts would choose the low line giving Belyea the high side as they came to green.  Belyea would prove to make the high side work and take the lead followed by Potts, Earl and #77 Caley Weese had now made her way up to fourth place.  Weese would make her way around Earl for third just as the caution came out for #88 of Brian Down as he struck the front straight retaining wall.  Belyea would again line up on the top and Potts on the bottom for the restart and the two battled side by side going down into turn one but Belyea would once again gain control.   Weese was now trying to work underneath Potts for second when the forth place car of Nayler would spin bringing out the caution for the third time.  Belyea again took control on the restart but it was short lived when one lap later #75 Beau Brown would spin off turn one brining out another quick caution.  On the restart it was deja-vu as Belyea would jump two the high side and once again get the jump on Potts.  #57 Charlie Sandercock who had fallen as far back as seventh place was no making his way around Weese for third and had his sights set on Potts for second.  The fifth caution of the event would fall on lap 33 when Weese who had been having a great race suffered a mechanical failure and slowed to a stop on the front straight setting up yet again another shoot out restart between Potts and Belyea.  However this time Potts would time his start just perfect getting the bite of the bottom part of the race surface and power down into turn one ahead of Belyea.  Potts would lead and Sandercock was now trying to work underneath Belyea for second.  The two would battle back and forth for five laps, both taking their turn in the runner up position.  Earl who was running forth had his first taste of bad luck in the 2012 season as his left rear tire would go down causing him to fade fast but he would stay out trying to stay on the lead lap and hope for a caution.  Potts had opened up a full straight away lead as Sandercock and Belyea battled for second.   Just as Potts was cruising 09 of Vanderlinden would spin off turn three for the sixth and final caution on lap 43.  Once again Potts chose the bottom for the restart and Belyea was up top with Sandercock sitting in third place.  The first attempt at the restart was called back for Belyea jumping and when they lined up again to fire for the final time of the night Potts would spin the tires and loose his momentum allowing Belyea to grab the lead back and Sandercock to follow.  Nothing was stopping Belyea now as he rolled through the last seven laps on route to his first win of 2012.  Sandercock and Potts would follow up with second and third respectively.  Belyea’s win would earn him the Campbellford Chrysler driver of the week honours.

#19 Zeke McKeown would pick up the Mid-Season 40 Lap win in the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified division well #72 Doug Anderson made it a clean sweep on the night winning the Custom Carts Poll award, his heat and the 30 lap feature event in the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks.
