Down, Shorts, Anderson, Perry, Burrows, Kirkland win on night six Kart Klub action
BRIGHTON – Perfect weather greeted a growing pit area for night six of the inaugural 2014 Brighton Speedway Kart Klub season. A record 31 drivers signed in for completion on the 1/8-mile oval.
Carson Down scores another Box Stock win
Carson Down (No.55 Image Landscaping) used his outside front row starting position for the Box Stock 1A feature to grab an early lead and win the 10-lap feature. Down led every trip around Brighton Speedway and danced to the finish line for the victory.
Down had to be evasive on the final lap to hold off a hard-charging Claire McDonald (No.17 McDonald Homes) who made an exciting move to the bottom groove in the final corner, but missed the victory by a wheel length. Down and McDonald were followed across the finish line by Keira Turner (No.92 Quinte Towing), Cameron Bristow (No.99 Bay Marine), Jacob Down (No.57 Image Landscaping), and Max McDonald (No.5 McDonald Homes).
Carson Down and Max McDonald were the heat race winners.
Shorts is tops in Box Stock 1B
Asher Heard (No.52G State Farm Insurance) and Nathan Shorts (No.20 Towne and Country Liquidation) led the Box Stock 1B field to the green flag for the 10-lap main event. Heard led the majority of the race before Shorts got by in turn two in the closing laps. Heard got shuffled to the back and brought out the only yellow of the race when he spun to the infield on the frontstretch after contact in turn four got him sideways.
Shorts won the dramatic one-lap dash to the finish ahead of James Markland (No.21 Lawns We Do), and Ryan Greig (No.48 Greig Truck & Trailer), who bounced back from a heat race accident to finish third. Heard and Ryan Post (No.11R Free Flow) completed the top-five running order. Shorts also won the six-lap qualifying heat.
Anderson rallies for Sportsman win
An intense 15-lap Sportsman feature saw the lead exchanged several times before Trenton’s Kyle Anderson (No.17A Hunt’s Bobcat Service) managed to hold the lead long enough to park in victory lane. Anthony Rinaldi (No.77) and Nathan Rinaldi (No.3) led the field to green, but Anderson vaulted in to the second spot on the first lap ahead of Nathan.
Anderson assumed the lead on lap four from Anthony, only to have Nathan take it away two laps later. Anderson was able to take back the lead on lap 11 and survived a pair of late race restarts to earn the victory over Nathan, Anthony, and Jacob Perry (No.9 Apex Graphics). Nathan Rinaldi was the heat race winner.
Perry defeats strong Box Stock 2 field
Kaitlyn O’Blenis (No.23k John’s Car Care) and Holly Denard (No.02) paced the field to green ahead of the 10-lap Box Stock feature race. Unfortunately for Denard, contact as the field came to the green flag ended her night of racing.
Perry quickly took over the lead once the race went green and built a big lead. Jaiden Mattice (No.J3 Moroni’s Restaurant), last week’s winner, had other ideas and tried to cut in to Perry’s lead. He did just that, but ran out of laps as Perry’s consistency was enough to earn the win. Brockville Ontario Speedway regular Kalen Draper (No.18k Draper Doors) was third ahead of Cole McKeown (No.11 McDonald Homes), O’Blenis, and Emma Terpstra (No.22). Denard and Raiah Lough (No.07 BOS Auto) were not able to finish after the early contact. Mattice and Denard won the qualifying heat races.
Burrows’ streak continues
Hannah McCrory (No.49 Apex Graphics) and Nathan Rinaldi (No.3) led the Junior Restricted division field at the start of the 15-lap feature. McCrory led lap one before Carrissa Burrows (No.33c) took the lead on lap two. Shortly after Burrows took the lead, Brody Desrosiers (No.90 Bay Marine) got in to McCrory in turn two, landing on the front end of the No.49. McCrory suffered heavy damage to the nose of her kart that ended her race.
Burrows dominated the final 13 laps of the race, despite the best efforts of Rinaldi. The Amerliasburg, Ont. pilot continued to her sixth victory of the season over Rinaldi, Desrosiers, and McCrory. Burrows is undefeated so far this season.
Kirkland wins Heavy Stock invasion
A quad of Brockville Heavy Stock drivers made the trip to Brighton for a 15-lap feature. Davey Topping (No.42) of Mallorytown started on the pole and led the first lap before Dylan Kirkland (No.88 NAPA Auto Parts) of Brockville jumped to the lead. A single caution at lap four when Brian Clark (No.88x Hodge Flooring) spun in two slowed the field. Kirkland got an excellent restart and opened a huge gap. Clark rebounded from the spin and moved in to second after getting by Nathan Berry (No.14 All Out Performance) of Brockville.
Clark ran down Kirkland’s 10 kart-length lead over the final 10 laps and was in contention for the win by the time the white flag waved. A single car length separated the two drivers down the backstraight, but Clark could not get inside Kirkland on the final corner for the victory. Topping finished third and Berry was fourth. Clark won the eight-lap qualifying heat.
