Pecore Scores First DIRT Sportsman Win during the Applefest Shootout at Brighton Speedway
For Immediate Release
By Greg Calnan & Angela Rinaldi
The racing action was non stop during day one of the Cool 100 Applefest Shootout at Brighton Speedway Friday, September 20th. The race card was jam packed and the track was dry slick, creating an exciting action packed night of racing.
A first career DIRTcar tour win was on Shane Pecore’s mind heading into Applefest Weekend at Brighton Speedway. After claiming a non-sanctioned Sportsman win at the 1/3 mile oval in 2009 confidence was high for the current Brockville Ontario Speedway champion. A fast car and a little luck helped Pecore realize his dream as he cashed in on the 35 lap race.
Justin Sharp and Paul Gaboury led the 31 car field to the green flag. Sharp was strong from the beginning and held the lead through the first half of the race. Brad Rouse, Jessica Power and Chris Herbison all stayed close to the leader, but were unable to seriously challenge for the top spot.
Sixth place starter Pecore began to make his move during the mid-stages of the race and reeled in the leader. With plenty of rubber in the lower and middle grooves the top two ran nose to tail in the high line. Pecore tried a number of times to make a pass to the inside, but was unable to get any traction to take the top spot.
A late race caution would take away Sharp’s chance to win as the driveshaft broke coming to the green flag. He pulled to the infield and handed the lead to Pecore. In the closing laps defending race winner Cody McPherson charged to front from his 19thstarting position and made a serious run for the win. Pecore though held his ground and captured his first career DIRTcar Sportsman tour win. McPherson held on for second and Jessica Power was third. Brent Bigolo was the hard charger of the race coming from his 22nd starting spot and finishing 9th.
In the TUSA Mod-Lite Canadian Nationals feature event Josh Sliter used some steady driving on the outside groove to pass Tim Anderson for the win. Sliter cashed in on the $500 pay day.
Jason Powers was dominate in round 7 of the Ford Dingwall Memorial Vintage Modified race and claimed the win.
The Brighton Automotive Pro Stock feature event was a 20 lap dash to the front. With visitors joining the ranks to prepare for the Saturday event, the Big Smooth Doug Anderson was faced with greater competition in the feature line up and made it back up to third, following #32 Mike Fawcett and M1 Rob Murray over the line.
The Bill’s Johns Comp 4 feature put #43 Brandon Wilkie in Victory Lane ahead of points leader Tom Vance #43 and Rob Brooks driving the #31 took third. The Quinte Septic Stingers saw #99 Arthur McCauley take his second feature win of the season followed by #95 Christopher Lammle and #19 Del MacGregor.
The 9th Annual Applefest Shootout Weekend was proudly presented by Cool 100.1FM, Lucas Oil Products Canada, VP Racing Fuels, Mystical Distributing Company Ltd., Coca-Cola and ImageFactor.ca Motorsport Designs & Photos. Saturday’s Cool 100 Applefest Shootout was cancelled due to rain. No rain date will be scheduled. As a result the regular points for the OILgard Anti Rust Canadian Modified Division is in the books and #33 Ryan Scott from Kingston takes the Championship Title.
The next event to hit the oval is the rescheduled John’s Equipment presentation of the Danny Reid Memorial 50 Lap Canadian Modified Race, the McDougall Insurance and Financial Great Crate Race, as well as final points nights for the Stingers and Comp 4’s. Added to the excitement is a 10 Lap Late Model Dash to break the tie in the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Pro Late Model points battle. Reigning Champion #11 Corey Earl will battle against #57 Charlie Sandercock in a 10 Lap Dash to the line. The winner will be crowned the 2013 points champion. The Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks has also been added to the race card for a non points event. Racing Action on Saturday September 28th gets underway at 5:50PM with a group photo on the race track with Caley Weese and all those who contributed to the 2013 Anti Bullying Campaign.
