Sandercock, Ferguson, Anderson, Mills & Lammle Hit Victory Lane
By Angie Rinaldi with files from Clayton Johns
BRIGHTON – The racing action at Brighton Speedway is hot now in the month of August. A full race card Saturday night meant five divisions of racing as well as the Gord’s Water Vantastics on Bellevue Fabricating Ltd. night at the track.
The night kicked off before any racing took to the track when past heroes were honoured for the annual Wall of Fame Inductions. The 2014 class of recipients were (L to R) Paul turner, Cecil Paul, and Peter Bontius. A dedication ceremony was held in the courtyard where their names sit amongst other great men and woman who have supported Brighton Speedway and grassroots racing throughout the decades.
Proud Sponsors in Victory Lane
The 30-lap feature for the Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models hit the track with polesitter Caley Weese (No.77 Dibbits Excavating) holding a strong lead. An early caution on lap ten brough the field of cars back together. On the ensuing restart, Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) took to the high side to grab first place.
The first caution seemed to breed more as the remaining 20 laps saw another six cautions allowing the Greg Belyea (No.25 Excel Tower Service), Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabriciating Ltd) and Matt Vanderlinden (No. 09 Integra Racing Shocks) a chance to join the battle at the front. An exciting battle developed with Potts and Belyea both echanging the lead before Sandercock would grab the lead from Belyea on a late race restart.
Potts would make a valiant attempt to reclaim the lead one final time on lap 28 but Sandercock would hold on for the win. Vanderlinden edged Potts at the line for second and third respectively.
Third Times the Charm
The OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified feature would be a 30-lap Rona of Trenton Triple Crown event. Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) used the high side of the track to work around front row starters Zac McBride (No.8 Daddy’s Electric Tattoo) and Warren Mowat (No.46 Cormier’s Auto Recycling) and looked to gain a strong lead.
Meanwhile Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) and Ryan Scott ( No.33 J&J Automotive) picked their way through the competitive field. By the midway point in the race Ferguson had caught O’Blenis and was pressuring him from behind. A few laps later Ferguson would squeeze by on the bottom. O’Blenis would battle back on the high side in turns one and two but could not keep the momentum up through turns three and four. Ferguson would go on to win his third in a row followed by Scott and O’Blenis.
Anderson takes Duel in the Dirt point lead
In the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock 25-lap feature Doug Anderson battled back from an eventful qualifier that saw his No.72 Hunts Bobcat Service Camaro catch on fire. Anderson would start deep in the field with season long rival Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire). The two would stay in touch with each other as they moved through the pack. In the early laps they emerged one and two with Anderson in the lead by mid-race.
Ramsay made a number of attempts at Anderson including a run on the high side in the final laps but Anderson would hold on to the lead and take the win. The win comes in the first race of the Brighton Speedway / Merrittville Speedway Duel in the Dirt. The first combined race for the Duel in the Dirt Championship will take place at Merrittville Speedway on Saturday September 6th with the Brighton Speedway Duel in the Dirt combined event during the Applefest Shootout Weekend on September 20.
Mills hits victory lane for the first time in 2014
The Bills John’s Comp 4 division saw a new winner for the second time in as many weeks when Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) took the race lead early and dominated the 15-lap event. Holding off Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) and Josh French (No.00). Mills had to hold off Emily Weedman (No.87 Nate’s Auto Cosmedix) and Greer on a few restarts but did so without issue on route to the popular win. Mills’ win also earns her Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week honours.
Quinte Septic Stingers
The Quinte Septic Stinger division saw a different face in victory lane for the first time this season. After Del MacGregor (No.19 R.Ward Construction) won the first five races, Christopher Lammle (No.95 Lammle Repair) drove to his first victory of the season over Andy Fletcher (No.42 Like-Nu Driveway Sealing) and Jordan Pickell (No.93 Sowerby Signs).
Gord’s Water Vantasitics
The Gord’s Water Vantastics were given an obstacle to race around for their second appearance of 2014. The drivers were forced to squeeze through the tires placed on the front straight each lap or be penalized a lap for missing them. Jody Trottman No.1048 and Jason Parks No.95 led the field the green and the two battled hard through the first few laps with Parks eventually taking the lead. Parks would hold that lead until lap 8 when Kyle Sopaz (No.12) finally worked underneath Parks for the lead. Sopaz and his passenger would go on to race the remaining four laps unscathed and never missed the tires to capture the victory. Amy Vandertoorn (No.78) drove a strong race to second place however was penalized one lap for missing the tires handing second place back to Parks.
